When you insert a numbered MathType equation in Word, MathType uses Word's field codes to insert the number, but there's nothing in the field code itself that identifies an equation uniquely. For example, here are the field codes for equation number (1.1) in a document with 3 equations (1.1 through 1.3). Using the Equation Editor Inserting an Equation To insert an equation, do one of the following. Word: Insert / Object / Microsoft Equation 3.0 WordPerfect: Insert / Equation If you are using Word on your home computer, you may want to add the equation editor to the toolbar so that it is much quicker to add equations.
The Drawing Toolbar consists in a Microsoft Word template document (files with extension « .dot ») displaying a special command bar to the user. With the various buttons offered, the user can then create simple mathematical figures and choose a proper layout on the page.
The Drawing Toolbar exports many commands that already exist in Microsoft Word but are most of the time not easily accessible to the average user. Other functions have also been implemented for mathematical purposes, such as creating a grid, triangles or graduated lines.
In order to be able to use the Drawing Toolbar, you need to proceed to the following:

To be sure, just open the template document, it should tell you where to copy it.Regrouping graphical objects enables to handle them as a single entity, so that this entity can be easily positioned on the document. I remarked that only few people use the grouping functions when drawing figures, causing terrible loss of productivity when things have to get moved inside the document or between documents.

Draws a line 'hand-free'. When wanting to emulate a hand-free drawing, first draw it using lines, rectangles, etc, then redraw on your existing figure with this tool. It enables drawing lines, broken lines, really hand-free parts, closed and opened curves and many other things. The first step consists in the drawing of the control points of the curve. In order to draw a straight line, you just need to click, then release the mouse. In order to draws a curve, you just need to click, then maintain the mouse button down. In order to finish the curve, you just need to click twice at the same place (this will create an opened curve), or to click twice where you started drawing the curse (this will create a closed curve).

These tools enable to choose the position of the figure on the document.
By default, the figure is placed over the text. Because of that, many users add newlines in the document in order for the figure to not be over the text, but this is not a nice solution. One should better use the figure positioning capabilities of Microsoft Word.

Many teachers use Microsoft Word to create worksheets. It’s not designed for the job, there are better options but Word is the easiest to learn and has the greatest compatibility – making it easy to share documents. One of the problems I see is that many people don’t know how to insert symbols into their document. For example, x (the letter) is not a good substitue for × (the multiplication symbol). This post shows you how to insert symbols like ×, ÷ and π quickly, on most computers (a Windows PC running Microsoft office).
The two methods shown here complement each other. That is, the first method is slightly easier but will not insert every symbol. The second method allows for more symbols. Both methods need you to remember some codes (hence I’ve supplied a cheat sheet to download and print out).
Many symbols can be inserted by pressing and holding the Alt key whilst typing in a four digit code on the number pad (that is the calculator like section on the right of most keyboards, make sure Num Lock is on). This method is referred to as “Alt +”.
For example, pressing and holding the Alt key whilst typing 0215 on the number pad will insert the × symbol.
Common mathematics symbols that can be entered using this method:

The second method can be used to produce the symbols shown in the first method, as well as some further symbols. In the “Code then Alt + x” method you type in a four digit code (you don’t have to use the number pad this time) and then press Alt + x. That is, the Alt key and the ‘x’ key at the same time.

You’re unlikely to remember these codes, except for the most common ones. So, here is a Maths Symbols Cheat Sheet (PDF, 258Kb) that you can download, print and place next to your computer(s). The cheat sheet has a brief version with the most common symbols listed, and a full version with more symbols.
An alternative method is to create a shortcut key for commonly used symbols. See Assign a shortcut key to a symbol or special character on Microsoft Office Online for the details. I don’t use this method because when you move between different computers (for example in your staffroom) you may have to recreate the shortcuts for them to work.
